Action Kivu provides the Democratic Republic of Congo's victims of violence with the opportunity to rebuild their lives on a foundation of hope, dignity, and economic self-sustenance. Our approach is spearheaded through two programs:
Growing out of our original two sewing workshops we've expanded to various programs, including sewing, basket making courses, agricultural training, and literacy classes. Through these programs women acquire the skills and capacity to work on their own and provide for themselves and their families.
Action Kivu works in partnership with primary schools in Congo to fund the education of vulnerable children affected by the ongoing conflict. Some of the students sponsored are now at the top of their classes.

The entrepreneurial programs and the schools are located in and around the city of Bukavu. Bukavu is the capital of South Kivu, a region of Congo that borders Rwanda. Visit our Learn More About Congo page to see a map of Bukavu.

Action Kivu exists to support non-profits in Congo that are working to bring peace and healing for the victims of the conflict. We are currently partnered with Actions pour le Bien être de la Femme et de l'Enfant au Kivu (ABFEK), a Congolese non profit organization that runs The Kivu Sewing Workshop and the Educational Assistance Program.

ABFEK is a homegrown operation started in a one-room shack in South Kivu with three foot-pedaled sewing machines. It was founded with a deep sense of compassion and love by Congolese educator and interpreter Amani Matabaro Tom and his seamstress wife, Amini Bukanda.

When Amani's own cousins were raped and left with long term physical and emotional damage, he decided to do something to help them. Since his wife was a seamstress, learning to sew seemed the best option. When people heard about what they were doing, other victims arrived at their doorstep and ABFEK was born. Amani has since added education assistance for children to ABFEK's program.

ABFEK is registered as a local non-governmental organization in the Democratic Republic of the Congo. Action Kivu, Inc. is a registered 501(c)(3) charity in the United States. Our EIN is 27-3537799.

Your support of Action Kivu enables direct human to human assistance to those suffering from unspeakable violence. It also encourages homegrown and sustainable solutions by caring individuals.
